THUNDER BAY — Fire destroyed a large sauna building at a Bible camp at Warnica Lake in Jacques Township Monday night.
No one was injured in the late-evening blaze at the Saalem Church camp.
Neighbouring residents noticed the fire around 11 p.m. and called 911.
The Lappe Volunteer Fire Department responded quickly, sending three vehicles to the scene, but crews arrived to find the structure already engulfed by the fire.
Nearby trees were burned by towering flames that lit up the night sky.
There were concerns the fire would find its way to other buildings, but firefighters were able to prevent further spread.
Lappe Fire Chief Darren Auld said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this point, due to the complete destruction of the sauna.
Auld said the church camp was vacant at the time of the fire.
The sauna had separate sections for male and female bathers, and was constructed in 1970.
